Leigh Bardugo: Biography

Leigh Bardugo

Leigh Bardugo is an Amerian author of fantasy novels for young adults. She was born in Jerusalem but her family moved to the United States when she was very young and she grew up in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Yale University and went on to have many different jobs, working in advertising, journalism and special effects at various stages.

Bardugo is known for her three novels in the Grisha trilogy: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising. All three novels were bestsellers. She wrote a follow-up novel, Six of Crows, which was set in the same world as the Grisha novels but with different characters.

Bardugo has spoken in interviews about her work as a make-up artist and how this aspect of beaity has been treated within her novels. She said that her work enabled her to see both the powers and the limitations of beauty, and this concept is embodied in the character of Genya in her novels. She was also influenced by Russian history and culture as well as medieval England to create the world of Ravka in her novels. Although Bardugo states that her fictional world of Ravka is not in Russia, it is easy to see how she has been influenced by Russia in her creation of this fictional universe.

Leigh Bardugo now lives in Hollywood where she works on her novels full time. In her spare time, she sings in a band.
