Lisa McMann: Biography

Lisa McMann

27 feb 1968

Lisa McMann was born and raised in Holland, Michigan, with her two elder brothers and her younger sister. She knew throughout most of her childhood that she wanted to be a writer. In 1990, McMann graduated from Calvin College.

McMann has written many books for teen and young adult readers, the first of which, WAKE, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list. WAKE was also showered with other awards and nominations including the IRA Young Adult’s Choice Award and a nomination for the Garden State Teen Book Award and for the Gateway Readers Award. WAKE has also been published in many different countries around the world and has been translated into around a dozen different languages. It is the first in a bestselling trilogy. She is also the author of the very successful The Unwanteds series.

Lisa McMann has drawn most of her ideas for her books from her own experiences and the world around her. She came up with the idea for the WAKE series after she had a dream that she was a part of her husband’s dream. This gave her the inspiration for a girl who gets sucked in other people’s dreams: the basis for her successful trilogy. The idea for her Unwanteds series came from budget cuts to her own children’s art classes at schools. This gave her the idea for a world in which children were punished much more severely for being creative.

Lisa McMann moved from her native Michigan with her husband and two children in 2004. She now lives in Phoenix, Arizona. When she isn’t writing, she spends her spare time cooking and watching cookery shows on the TV.
