Maria V. Snyder: Biography

Maria V. Snyder

Maria V. Snyder is an author of fantasy novels and was born in Pennsylvania, USA. She grew up in Philadelphia and went on to study meteorology at Pennsylvania State University. After working for several years as a meteorologist, she began to write stories. She enrolled in an MA course in fiction writing at Seton Hill University. After graduating, she joined the staff and is now a teacher and mentor on the MFA course.

Snyder’s meteorological background has proved useful as the inspiration for some of her works. Her novels Inside Out and Outside In are set in a world where everything is reused and recycled. Her meteorological expertise can also be seen in her Glass series, in which the protagonist can trap magic inside works of glass. The first novel in this series, Storm Glass, is named after a meteorological phenomenon and it is easy to spot the weather elements within it.

Snyder’s first novel, Poison Study, was published in 2005 and was very well received. It won the Compton Cook award for Best First Novel and the Reader’s Choice Award. It was the first in the trilogy and the third book, Magic Study, became a New York Times bestseller. Storm Glass, Scent of Magic and Touch of Power were given the Golden Leaf Award and Snyder was also recognised with the Prism Award for Outside In.

Maria V. Snyder still lives in Pennsylvania but is now joined by her husband and their two children. She writes full time and mentors and teaches in her spare time. Snyder loves to travel and sometimes writes travel articles for local magazines.
